Summary:

From the Beatles to Beck, Sinatra to Sam Smith, a parade of era-defining artists have passed through the doors of the Capitol Records Tower, one of Hollywood's most distinctive landmarks and home to one of the world's most defining labels for the past 75+ years.

To commemorate this extraordinary history of recorded music, TASCHEN presents this official account of Capitol Records, from its founding year of 1942 to today. With a foreword by Beck, essays by cultural historians and music and architecture critics, as well as hundreds of images from Capitol's extensive archives, we follow the label's evolution and the making of some of the greatest music of the 20th and 21st centuries. Through pop, rock, country, classical, soul, and jazz, the photographic and musical history includes the label's most successful, cool, hip, and creative stars, as well as the one-hit wonders who had their all-too-brief moments in the spotlight.

Along the way, we encounter the likes of Miles Davis, Nat King Cole, the Kingston Trio, and Frank Sinatra in Capitol's first 20 years; the Beach Boys, the Band, and the Beatles in the 1960s; global rock magnets Pink Floyd, Wings, Steve Miller Band, Bob Seger, and Linda Ronstadt in the 1970s; Beastie Boys, Duran Duran, Radiohead, and Bonnie Raitt in the 1980s and 1990s; and such contemporary stars as Coldplay, Katy Perry, and Sam Smith. An unmissable milestone for music lovers, Capitol Records is a live and kicking celebration of the mighty giant of the industry that created the soundtrack to generations past, present, and future.

Several years ago, a treasure trove containing some 6,000 original Bob Dylan manuscripts was revealed to exist. Their destination? Tulsa, Oklahoma. The documents, as essential as they are intriguing-draft lyrics, notebooks, and diverse ephemera- comprise one of the most important cultural archives in the modern world. Along with countless still and moving images and thousands of hours of riveting studio and live recordings, this priceless collection now resides at The Bob Dylan Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, just steps away from the archival home of Dylan's early hero, Woody Guthrie. Nearly all the materials preserved at The Bob Dylan Center are unique, previously unavailable, and, in many cases, even previously unknown. As the official publication of The Bob Dylan Center, BOB DYLAN: MIXING UP THE MEDICINE is the first wide-angle look at the Dylan archive, a book that promises to be of vast interest to both the Nobel Laureate's many musical fans and to a broader national and international audience as well. Edited by Mark Davidson and Parker Fishel, BOB DYLAN: MIXING UP THE MEDICINE focuses a close look at the full scope of Dylan's working life, particularly from the dynamic perspective of his ongoing and shifting creative processes-his earliest home recordings in the mid-1950s right up through Rough and Rowdy Ways (2020), his most recent studio recording, and into the present day. The centerpiece of BOB DYLAN: MIXING UP THE MEDICINE is a carefully curated selection of over 600 images including never-before-circulated draft lyrics, writings, photographs, drawings and other ephemera from the Dylan archive. With an introductory essay by Sean Wilentz and epilogue by Douglas Brinkley, the book features a surprising range of distinguished writers, artists and musicians, including Joy Harjo, Greil Marcus, Michael Ondaatje, Gregory Pardlo, Amanda Petrusich, Tom Piazza, Lee Ranaldo, Alex Ross, Ed Ruscha, Lucy Sante, Greg Tate and many others. After experiencing the collection firsthand in Tulsa, each of the authors was asked to select a single item that beguiled or inspired them. The resulting essays, written specifically for this volume, shed new light on not only Dylan's creative process, but also their own. BOB DYLAN: MIXING UP THE MEDICINE is an unprecedented glimpse into the creative life of one of America's most groundbreaking, influential and enduring artists.

Rock writer Mick Wall draws on insider access, as former confidante to both Plant and Page, to craft the definitive biography of the world's most legendary rock band-Led Zeppelin. Comprehensive and yet intimately detailed, When Giants Walked the Earth gets into the principals' heads to bring to life both an unforgettable band and an unrepeatable slice of rock history.

Fizzing with an infectious passion for the magic of rock music, Bobby Gillespie's vivid and evocative new memoir, TENEMENT KID: From the Streets of Glasgow in the 1960s to Drummer in Jesus and Mary Chain and Frontman in Primal Scream, traces a path from a post-war Glasgow tenement to the release of Screamadelica, the band's psychedelic award-winning masterpiece that helped usher in the 1990s. So much more than a rockstar's memoir, Tenement Kid is also a book filled with the joy and wonder of a rock'n'roll apostle who radically reshaped the future sounds of fin de sieIcle British pop. Structured in four parts, Tenement Kid builds like a breakbeat crescendo from Gillespie's working-class Glaswegian upbringing to the "Second Summer of Love" that saw the '80s bleed into the '90s and a new kind of electronic soul music starting to pulse through the Great Britain's consciousness. In this book, Gillespie takes us through the release of Screamadelica and the tour that followed as Primal Scream become the most innovative British band of the new decade. Published thirty years after the release of that seminal album, Tenement Kid cuts a righteous path through a decade lost to Thatcherism and saved by acid house. It's a joyful, celebratory, and beautifully written book which will remind us of better times, just-as we hope-those better times might be returning.

From their beginnings as teenagers experimenting in a San Fernando Valley garage dubbed "The Hell Hole" to headlining major music festivals around the world, discover the whole story of Bad Religion's forty-year career in irreverent style.

Do What You Want's principal storytellers are the four voices that define Bad Religion: Greg Graffin, a Wisconsin kid who sang in the choir and became an L.A. punk rock icon while he was still a teenager; Brett Gurewitz, a high school dropout who founded the independent punk label Epitaph Records and went on to become a record mogul; Jay Bentley, a surfer and skater who gained recognition as much for his bass skills as for his antics on and off the stage; and Brian Baker, a founding member of Minor Threat who joined the band in 1994 and brings a fresh perspective as an intimate outsider.

With a unique blend of melodic hardcore and thought-provoking lyrics, Bad Religion paved the way for the punk rock explosion of the 1990s, opening the door for bands like NOFX, The Offspring, Rancid, Green Day, and Blink-182 to reach wider audiences. They showed the world what punk could be, and they continue to spread their message one song, one show, one tour at a time.

About the Author:

Bad Religion formed in Los Angeles in 1980, and ranks among the most influential American punk rock bands of all time. They have released seventeen albums that have sold more than five million copies, and they continue to sell out venues all over the world.

Summary:

n this "vivid and inspiring" NYT bestseller (Newsweek), the Red Hot Chili Peppers' lead singer and songwriter shares a searingly honest account of life in the rock scene's fast lane -- from the darkness into the light.

In 1983, four self-described "knuckleheads" burst out of the mosh-pitted mosaic of the neo-punk rock scene in L.A. with their own unique brand of cosmic hardcore mayhem funk. Over twenty years later, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, against all odds, have become one of the most successful bands in the world. Though the band has gone through many incarnations, Anthony Kiedis, the group's lyricist and dynamic lead singer, has been there for the whole roller-coaster ride. In Scar Tissue, Kiedis delivers a compelling life story from a man "in love with everything" -- the darkness, the death, the disease. Even his descent into drug addiction was a part of that journey, another element transformed into art.

Whether he's honoring the influence of the beautiful, strong women who have been his muses or remembering the roaring crowds of Woodstock and the Dalai Lama's humble compound, Kiedis shares a compelling story about the price of success and excess. Scar Tissue is a story of dedication and debauchery, of intrigue and integrity, of recklessness and redemption -- a story that could only have come out of the world of rock.

About the Author:

Anthony Kiedis grew up in L.A. and formed The Red Hot Chili Peppers in high school. The group's breakthrough album, Blood Sugar Sex Magik, was recorded in 1991; their 1999 album Californication sold over 13 million copies worldwide. Their latest album, By the Way, is one of their best sellers yet. The band toured extensively in 2003. Kiedis lives in the Los Angeles area.

Summary

A classic rock biography from the classic rock biographer-Stephen Davis, author of Hammer of the Gods-a serious, vibrant book about the defining face and voice of Fleetwood Mac, Stevie Nicks.

Stevie Nicks is a legend of rock, but her energy and magnetism sparked new interest in this icon. At 68, she's one of the most glamorous creatures rock has known, and the rare woman who's a real rock `n' roller.

Gold Dust Woman gives "the gold standard of rock biographers" (The Boston Globe) his ideal topic: Nicks' work and life are equally sexy and interesting, and Davis delves deeply into each, unearthing fresh details from new, intimate interviews and interpreting them to present a rich new portrait of the star. Just as Nicks (and Lindsay Buckingham) gave Fleetwood Mac the "shot of adrenaline" they needed to become real rock stars-according to Christine McVie-Gold Dust Woman is vibrant with stories and with a life lived large and hard:

  • How Nicks and Buckingham were asked to join Fleetwood Mac and how they turned the band into stars
  • The affairs that informed Nicks' greatest songs
  • Her relationships with the Eagles' Don Henley and Joe Walsh, and with Fleetwood himself
  • Why Nicks married her best friend's widower
  • Her dependency on cocaine, drinking and pot, but how it was a decade-long addiction to Klonopin that almost killed her
  • Nicks' successful solo career that has her still performing in venues like Madison Square Garden
  • The cult of Nicks and its extension to chart-toppers like Taylor Swift and the Dixie Chicks

Summary:

A multilayered memoir from a multifaceted artist.

As a musician, an actor, a muse, an icon, the breadth of Debbie Harry's impact on our culture has been matched by her almost Sphinx-like reticence about her inner life. Through it all-while being acclaimed as one of the most beautiful women in the world, prized by a galaxy of leading photographers and fashion designers, beloved by legions of fans for her relentless, high-octane performances, selling 50 million albums or being painted by Andy Warhol-Debbie Harry has infused her perennial Blondie persona with a heady mix of raw sexuality and sophisticated punk cool.

In Face It, Debbie Harry invites us into the complexity of who she is and how her life and career have played out over the last seven decades. Upending the standard music memoir, with a cutting-edge style keeping with the distinctive qualities of her multi-disciplined artistry, Face It includes a thoughtful introduction by Chris Stein, rare personal photos, original illustrations, fan artwork installations, and more.

Peppered with colorful characters, Face It features everyone from bands Blondie came up with on the 1970s music scene-The Ramones, Television, Talking Heads, Iggy Pop and David Bowie-to artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat, Marina Abramovic and H.R. Giger of Alien fame. It explores her successful acting career (she has starred in over 30 film roles including David Cronenberg's Videodrome and John Waters' Hairspray), her weekends with William S. Burroughs and her attempted abduction by serial killer Ted Bundy. Ranging from the hardscrabble grit and grime of the early New York City years to times of glorious commercial success, interrupted by a plunge into heroin addiction, the near-death of partner Chris Stein, a heart-wrenching bankruptcy and Blondie's break up as a band, an amazing solo career and then a stunning return with Blondie, this is a cinematic story of an artist who has always set her own path.

Inspirational, entertaining, shocking, humorous and eye-opening, Face It is a memoir as dynamic as its subject.

Fugazi, one of music's most revolutionary and gloriously indefinable bands, played their first concert on September 3, 1987. The first edition of Keep Your Eyes Open: The Fugazi Photographs of Glen E. Friedman was released by Burning Flags Press exactly twenty years later. This revised edition features brand-new photos and an interview with Friedman and Fugazi singer/guitarist Ian MacKaye.

Keep Your Eyes Open presents the best of Friedman's unparalleled photographic documentation of Fugazi's members in almost 200 color and black-and-white images captured by Friedman onstage and off between 1986 and Fugazi's last US concert in 2002.

Fugazi evolved from Washington, DC's, hardcore punk scene of the late 1970s and early 1980s. While it would be impossible to fully capture Fugazi in any one medium, Friedman's book effectively complements the band's Dischord Records catalog, which includes seven studio albums, one soundtrack, three EPs, and hundreds of live concert CDs produced from Fugazi's own soundboard recordings.

Fugazi--a band dedicated to democratic self-management, highlighted by complete artistic and financial control--booked its own tours worldwide, and was often the first band to perform in unconventional venues around the world in order to maintain ticket prices that averaged just five dollars, a practice that opened many new venue doors to other touring artists. In addition, Fugazi has never marketed or licensed its name or likeness for posters, T-shirts, pins, or other ancillary merchandise items. Fugazi's unwavering respect for its audience is one of the band's most indelible marks on modern music. The band went on indefinite hiatus in late 2002.

Rush: Album by Album pays genuine tribute to this iconic rock band's discography by moderating frank, entertaining conversations about all 20 of Rush's studio albums.

Rush: Album by Album, from rock journalist and Rush authority Martin Popoff, pays tribute to the band's discography by moderating frank, entertaining conversations about all 20 of Rush's studio albums.

Formed in Toronto in 1968, the rock trio Rush has gone on to multiplatinum success behind the distinctive high register and virtuosic bass-playing of frontman Geddy Lee, the legendary drumming and lyric-writing of Neil Peart, and the guitar heroics of Alex Lifeson. Despite having just four chart-topping singles since the release of their debut LP in 1974, Rush has nonetheless sold more than 25 million albums in the U.S. and more than 40 million worldwide.

The Canadian trio may be the definition of an "album band," and this new book from prolific rock journalist and acknowledged Rush authority Martin Popoff pays tribute to the band's discography by moderating in-depth, frank, and entertaining conversations about all 20 of Rush's studio albums. Inside, the author gathers 20 rock journalists and authors who offer insights, opinions, and anecdotes about every release.

Together, the conversations comprise a unique historical overview of the band, as well as a handsome discography. Popoff also includes loads of sidebars that provide complete track listings, details on album personnel, information on where and when the albums were recorded, and sidebar facts about the albums, their songs, and the band.

About the Author

Martin Popoff has been described as the world's most famous heavy-metal journalist, though he has covered plenty of Punk and New Wave albums in his career of 7,000-plus album reviews. He has penned many books on various bands, genres of rock, and record collecting, including Voyageur Press' Rush: The Illustrated History; Metallica: The Complete Illustrated History; The Art of Metal; and The Big Book of Hair Metal. Rockstar music critic Everett True has signed to Criminal Records for the imminent release of his in-the-flesh, first-hand account "Live Through This (Part 1 - Nirvana)". Known for bringing Nirvana to the masses, Everett was the first outside journalist to interview the band.  Sent to America to cover the Seattle underground scene for UK music paper Melody Maker in 1989, upon his return Everett wrote a hyper-enthusiastic article that featured such (then unknown) bands as Soundgarden, Mudhoney and Nirvana and was later credited with breaking 'grunge' to the outside world.   Grunge and Nirvana would break in the UK. It was the UK that first embraced the scene's raw energy and Kurt Cobain's untrammelled scream. Within a couple of years, Nirvana would go on to break in America and become the biggest rock band in the world. "It was Everett who brought the label men scurrying to Seattle with their cheque books after writing excitedly in Melody Maker about the city's independent rock scene in 1989" Carol Clerk, UNCUT From these events bloomed a close personal friendship between Everett and Kurt Cobain, one that would last from the band's humble beginnings and throughout their superstardom. Described by Courtney Love as "that guy who runs England", Everett accompanied Nirvana and Hole on tour as a personal friend. Continuously photographed together, Everett famously wheeled Kurt out to play Reading Festival in his surgical robes (and wearing a blonde wig that had been sent to Everett the week before by his younger sister).  It was Everett who introduced Kurt to his future wife Courtney Love. "Everett True's passion for music took him through all manner of tragedy and emotional upheaval" EVENING STANDARD. Released alongside the 30th Anniversary celebrations of Nirvana's second album Nevermind, the book gives a first-hand insight into the myths behind Nirvana's success. "Live Through This is superior in it's personal stance not least because True was a genuine friend of the bands he documents... This makes ET's account of Nirvana's flashfire career... that much more valid, and moving; Everett was a (i)part(i) of the story - the story still too painful and too personal for total recall" Steve Chick AMMOCITY. COM Fast forward to 2021. The label deal between Criminal Records and Everett True is a non-traditional one as it births a book release rather than a record.   Yet, when considering authentic rockstar status, an independent deal makes for a perfect match.

Summary

Every album and every song ever released by the Beatles - from "Please Please Me" (U.S. 1963) to "The Long and Winding Road" (U.S. 1970) - is dissected, discussed, and analyzed by two music historians in this lively, fully illustrated work.

All the Songs delves deep into the history and origins of the Beatles and their music. This first-of-its-kind book draws upon decades of research, as music historians Margotin and Guesdon recount the circumstances that led to the composition of every song, the recording process, and the instruments used. Here, we learn that one of John Lennon's favorite guitars was a 1958 Rickenbacker 325 Capri, which he bought for £100 in 1960 in Hamburg, Germany. We also learn that "Love Me Do," recorded in Abbey Road Studios in September 1962, took 18 takes to get right, even though it was one of the first songs John and Paul ever wrote together. And the authors reveal that when the Beatles performed "I Want to Hold Your Hand" on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1964, John's microphone wasn't turned on, so viewers heard only Paul singing.

The hundreds of photographs throughout the book include rare black-and-white publicity stills, images of Beatles instruments, and engaging shots of the musicians in-studio.

All the Songs is the must-have book for the any true Beatles fan.
